On Thursday in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, Romania's President Traian Basescu discussed with his Turkmen counterpart Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov the materialisation of cooperation plans between the Romanian port of Constanta and the Turkmen Bashi port.

'I have underscored the need to materialise the cooperation plans between the ports of Constanta and Turkmen Bashi that was initiated in May 2011 in Bucharest under a protocol, so that the two ports may be integrated into the Asia-Europe inter-modal transport corridor. In the same context, I hailed the establishment by the Turkmen-Romanian Joint Intergovernmental Committee of a Romanian-Turkmen working group for transport cooperation, which main aim is the use by the Turkmen shippers of the Romanian Black Sea port of Constanta and its inter-modal resources,' Basescu told a joint press conference with his Turkmen counterpart.

He added that he also discussed real possibilities for cooperation in the field of water resources management.

'I introduced to Mr. President a set of proposals from the Romanian Ministry of the Environment related to the promotion of experience exchanges in public water supply issues, water evaluation and forecast, border water management and the management of river basins,' Basescu added.

Berdymuhamedov underscored the existence of a huge potential for economic and trade partnerships between Turkmenistan and Romania.

'Romania is a strategic partner precisely in the development of future international and communications routes in the North-South and East-West directions. We talked a lot about this today,' he said.
