Healthcare: 232 pediatric heart surgeries performed by doctors of Targu Mures Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases

The surgeons of the Targu Mures Cardiovascular Surgery Institute (central Romania) have performed 232 pediatric heart surgeries in 2013 to repair congenital heart defects, with 49 of them representing emergencies and 31 being performed on newborns (0-28 days of age), according to a Health Ministry press release.

Also in 2013, the Health Ministry launched the Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery Development Programme, in cooperation with the San Donato Clinic based in Milan and the Bambini Cardiopatici nel Mondo Foundation.

The fundamental goal of the project was to increase the surgery capacity in the field of pediatric cardiovascular surgery by training the doctors to perform operations at the Cardiovascular Surgery Center within the Emergency Clinical Hospital for Children M.S.Curie in Bucharest, the Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases in Iasi and the Timisoara-based Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases.

Other objectives were: performing operations at the Cardiovascular Surgery Center within the Emergency Clinical Hospital for Children M.S.Curie in Bucharest, traineeships at the Italian San Donato Clinic and exchange of experience on pediatric cardiovascular surgery.

Three medical missions have been carried out so far at the Bucharest Marie Curie Hospital, in Sept. (Sept. 23-26, 2013) and Dec. (Dec. 2-8 and Dec. 9-13, 2013). The Romanian doctors and medical assistants taking part in the training programme alongside Italian experts have performed 17 heart surgeries on children (aged 0 -15 years) suffering from congenital heart defects.

'As of January 2014, another two Romanian doctors, a surgeon and a cardiologist, will be attending a training in Italy within the Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery Development Programme, initiated by the Health Ministry, in collaboration with the San Donato Clinic and the Bambini Cardiopatici nel Mondo Foundation,' the ministry informs.
