Eurostat:Romania sees EU's second largest decrease in retail trade
Romania's retail trade fell 0.3% in November 2013 compared to the previous month, in what is the second largest decrease recorded by a EU member country, according to data released on Wednesday by the European Statistical Office (Eurostat).
Conversely, in the euro area, retail trade expressed as seasonally adjusted figures rose 1.4% in November 2013 compared with October 2013, while among the member states for which data are available, total retail trade rose in nineteen and fell just in two: Malta (- 2.1%) and Romania (- 0.3%).
On a year-on-year basis, retail trade increased 1.6% in November 2013 in the euro area, and 2% in the European Union. In this reference system, Romania counts to the 18 member states that saw a rise in retail trade. The largest increases were recorded by Luxembourg (12.6%), Poland (7.2%) and Bulgaria (6.2%). In Romania retail trade grew by 1.9% at an annual rate.
According to figures provided by the National Statistics Institute, the turnover of retail trade (motor vehicles and motorcycles excepted) dropped 0.2% in November 2013 compared to the previous month - expressed as adjusted series - due to the decrease in the retail sales of automotive fuels in specialized stores (-0.6 %) and in sales of food, beverages and tobacco (-0.5 %).
