Federation: EU will not support Romanian agriculture which might create problems
EU will not support Romanian agriculture which could cover many European markets if developed to its true potential, creating social problems, said Viorel Matei, the president of the National Federation of Farm Producers in Romania on Friday.
“The Romanians cannot enter other countries with ecological agriculture as every market protects its own producers. EU does not want to back this Romanian agriculture because Romanian agriculture has a huge potential and might create social problems in their countries. Why social problems? Because by having a super yield we could cover their market”, Matei said at the Mediafax Talks about Agriculture conference.
He gave as example genetically modified soy. EU says that each country decides to grow it or not and Romania decided not to do it. “We have the capacity to ensure 70% of what Europe needs. We have the potential to grow 2.2 million ha of soy. We would affect exports made by the US which make lobby in Europe to sell its genetically modified products from corn to whale size turkey,”Matei added.
He concluded that in this situation Romania will not find foreign sale markets with ecological agriculture where we think we have great potential.
