Agriculture: Minister Daea: Wheat yield 200,000 ton higher this year than in 2017

The wheat yield is this year 200,000 tons higher than in 2017, exceeding 10 million tons although it has been a difficult year, when Romania was devastated by extreme natural phenomena, said Petre Daea, the minister of agriculture and rural development declared at a press conference.

The head of MADR added that  barley harvests were also higher than last year.

MADR data show that this year’s wheat harvest exceeded 10.2 million tons, 2.38% higher than last year, when it was 10 million tons.

Ten counties obtained over 5 million tons: Timis with an average 6,200 kg/ha, Arad (6,100 kg/ha), Bihor (6,095 kg/ha), Constanta (5,652 kg/ha), Mehedinti (5,400 kg/ha), Calarasi (5,300 kg/ha), Ialomita (5,300 kg/ha), Satu Mare (5,100 kg.ha) and Braila (5,086 kg/ha).

The cereal yield reached 12.826 million tons, against 12.709 million tons in 2017, with an average of 4,655 kg/ha against 4,598 kg/ha last year.

The barley yield was 1.39 million tons, with an average of 5.204 kg/ha (1.271 million tons and average of 4,731 kg/ha in 2017).

Laurentiu Baciu, the president of the League of Farm Producers’ Associations of Romania (LAPAR) said recently that this year’s what yield will undoubtedly be lower than last year- at present estimates show at least a 20% drop compared to 2017. As long as harvesting is delayed by the water accumulated in fields, losses will grow.

Although barley was harvested in good conditions before the beginning of rains, rape yield suffered a 50% loss against 2017 because of the water shortage in the first part and later on because of extreme phenomena.

Corn and sunflower seem to save the situation, being in a normal development state, despite humidity excess that allowed the aggressive development of diseases and pests.

Last year, Romania reported an overall cereal yield of 27 million tons, which means 1.4 tons per each Romanian, with historic records for wheat, peas, barley, sunflower, soy, corn, potatoes , grapes and corn.

The wheat and rye yield was 10 million tons with profit of 4.83 tons/ha, while for corn it was 14.5 million tons, with an average of 6 tons/ha. Sunflower also had a record yield of 3.167 million tons in 2017 and a profit of 2.72 tons/ha.

According to statistic data, Romania ranked first in 2017 among EU member states, for sunflower, first for corn and second after France, for the yield obtained. For wheat Romania ranked first both for the area cultivated and yield.
