The ministry of energy: the incident in Austria will not be felt on the Romanian energy market

Minister of energy Toma Petcu had a meeting on Wednesday with  the main operators in the domain of production, storage and distribution of natural gas, following which he announced that the companies in the sector of natural gas are ready to ensure the consumption during the winter celebrations.

Similarly, during the meeting, the minister of energy brought into discussion the incident produced on Tuesday at the natural gas terminal in Baumgarten Austria in order to evaluate the possible consequences on Romania.

‘All the factors present in the meeting agreed that the event in Austria will not be felt on the Romanian energy market’ the minister of energy shows in a press release.

The purpose of the meeting which took place at the headquarters of the ministry was the evaluation of the way in which the winter programme has been implemented until now, as well as the preparation of the period of winter celebrations.

During this period, the average daily consumption of Romania is almost 50 million cubic metres natural gas with 10 million cubic metres less than the estimate of consumption for the current month.

The Italian minister of economic development stated on Tuesday emergency with regards to natural gas after the explosion at the Austrian terminal, saying that it will compensate the drop in imports with Italian stocks.

The explosion which took place on Tuesday morning  had as a consequence one death and 18 wounded, according to the paramedics and led to worries with regards to the supply of Croatia.

The explosion – an accident according to the police – took place at  the terminal in Baumgarten, close to the Slovakian border and was followed by a fire which was rapidly under control.

The gas pipeline in Baumgarten to Germany was not affected.

The explosion took place at 8:45 ( 9:45 Romanian time) in Baumgartern in the part of the installation which filters natural gas, according to Gas Connect Austria. It produced a fire which could be seen at 30 km, up to Vienne. The fire was controlled after some hours.
