Shale gas exploitation, a priority in the 2013 Governing Program

Kicking off exploration for the identification of exploitable bituminous schist reserves required for the exploitation of shale gas is a priority of the authorities' energy projects for 2013, as spelled out in the 2013 - 2016 Governing Program.

The priorities in the energy sector also envisage the expansion of petroleum and gas Black Sea exploration and exploitation activities, as well as resuming partnerships for the development of re-engineering projects and building new production capacities.

Thus, the priorities of the new governing program include strengthening the position on the electricity market of the Oltenia and Hunedoara Energy Complexes, resuming bidding for the building of Cernavoda nuclear reactors 3 and 4, attracting capital for investments in environment and retooling, as well as the construction of new energy groups in the Hunedoara and Oltenia energy complexes.

Reviving the partnerships forged for the Galati, Braila and Borzesti thermal power stations, developing electricity transmission networks connecting Dobrogea to the rest of the country, building the Tarnita-Lapustesti pumped storage hydroelectric power station and starting investments for the Islaz hydro-power station are other priority projects for the years to come.

The authorities intend to increase the exploitation degree of Romania's hydropower potential (upstream the Iron Gates I, Islaz, Bistrita), continue the production of heavy water at RAAN Drobeta Turnu Severin for competitive prices and initiate partnerships for the modernization of the Elcen Bucharest, Iernut and Doicesti thermal power stations.

Increasing the underground gas storage capacity is also a priority of the new government, as is the development of electricity and heat production capacities that will use household and industrial waste as a primary resource, so as to address environmental problems and supply the population with hot water and heat at low cost, reads the Governing Program.
