ROMATOM : reactors 3 and 4 to be built at Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant meets the principles of COP21

The Romanian nuclear industry hails the result of the international negotiations held in Paris and underscores that the project of reactors 3 and 4 to be built at Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant meets the principles of this agreement, ROMATOM Romanian Atomic Forum said in a release on last Thursday.

"The Romanian nuclear industry appreciates the balanced language of the agreement, which shows a neutral approach to the technologies for making electric power with low carbon emissions. Closing the Paris Accord, 'an historic and realistic accord' will, on the medium- and long-term define the approach to the energy and environmental policies at a global level. The orientation towards policies and projects meant to contribute to cutting the carbon emissions most certainly is also the focus of the Romanian authorities. It should be said that the project of Cernavoda's Units 3 and 4, waited for by the Romanian nuclear industry meets such requirements, as nuclear is a low-carbon emission technology", said Marius Gheorghiu, Managing Director of Elcomex IEA, the company holding ROMATOM chairmanship.

A major role in reaching a consensus on a non-discriminatory approach was played by the initiative Nuclear4climate launched by the French Society for Nuclear Energy (SFEN), the American Nuclear Society (ANS) and the European Nuclear Society (ENS), an initiative also backed by the Romanian Atomic Forum ROMATOM, the Nuclear Energy Romanian Association (AREN) together with Romania AREN Young Generation (AREN-YGN) Network and Romania Women in Nuclear (WIN) association, the release said.

ROMATOM was set up in 2001, when 14 private and state-owned companies as well as two nongovernmental organisations decided to set up the Romanian Atomic Forum; the body currently boasts more than 30 members.

The association seeks to promote the peaceful-purpose use of nuclear energy in Romania and support the nuclear national programme as well as to coordinate all the activities pledged by its accession to and participation in the European Atomic Forum FORATOM.
