Romania was this winter a factor of balance in the whole region from the point of view of energy ( state secretary)

This winter, Romania was a factor of balance in the whole region, from the point of view of energy and at a certain moment, 12% of the energy produced in the country assured the balance for all the other states around us, stated on Wednesday Corina Popescu state secretary in the ministry of energy, in a debate on the issue of energy security of the European Union.

‘Romania is at the border of the European Union, from the perspective of energy. This can mean an advantage but, at the same time, there are risks and vulnerabilities. I consider it is not necessary just to identify these risks and vulnerabilities but to come with plans of measures and how to transform these risks and vulnerabilities in advantages for Romania’ Popescu said.

According to her, at the European level there are discussions about a new package of regulations, called the Winter package.

‘In the winter package, the concept is changed. We don’t talk, as in package III about a unique energy market, but we are talking about regionalisation, about regional markets, about network codes. We are talking about regionalisation including the secondary regulation framework’ the ministry official said.

Popescu added that Romania played a very important role in the region over this winter.

‘We no longer need to have imposed things or to take them as it is desired at European level. I think we have the right to define our own mixture, and this winter we have proved that our balanced policy to have a balanced mixture with all the technologies was a big advantage for us, but not only for Romania. Romania was this winter a balancing factor in the whole regionl. At a certain moment, 12% of the energy produced in Romania assured the balance for all the other states around us. It is an advantage and we need to start to express it.Of course, everything is done with some costs and we have to see how these costs can be approached in the future through fair policies’ Corina Popescu said.

She also said that there was a big openness on the part of the representatives of the European Commission if there are arguments enough.

The state secretary took part, on Wednesday at the launching of the study ‘ Energy diplomacy of the European Union and the potential of the development of new projects for infrastructure. The participation of Romania to the energy union’ made by the European Institute in Romania.

According to the authors of the study, Romania can play a major role in the discussions regarding the definition of the European policies in the energy sector.

‘This issue should be on the agenda of the Romanian presidency of the EU in 2019. It is an issue which we could place on the agenda for all Europe and it is an issue where we could be leaders’ Sorin Ionita, chairman of the Expert Forum and coordinator of the study.
