Petrom won together with Exxon Mobil and Shell a bid for exploitations in the Ukrainian area of the Black Sea

A consortium made up of Petrom, Exxon Mobil, Shell and Nadra Ukrainy won the bid from Ukraine for the exploitation of oil and gas in the area Skifska in the Ukrainian area of the Black Sea, announced the press in Kiev. The losing part had been offered by the Russian Lukoil Overseas. The announcement was made by Eduard Stavitsky, the Ukrainian minister of Ecology and Natural Resources.

The representatives of Petrom confirmed that Exxon Mobil is the operator of the project, with a share of 40%, Shell has 35%, Petrom has 15% and the Ukrainian company Nadra has 10%. “We are happy about the announcement made by the Ukrainian minister, but we expect the official decision regarding the bid”, the representatives of the company stated.

According to a press release of the Ukrainian authorities quoted by Reuters, the area Skifska has a potential of 3-4 billion cubic metres of hydrocarbons and the area
Foroska of 2-3 billion cubic metres.

Ukraine wants to increase its energy independence towards Russia and made a request of bids at the end of June to draw partners for the exploitation of the two offshore areas.

The bid is in accordance with the long-term strategy of Kiev of not relying on energy imports from Russia, Reuters says. Ukraine imported approximately two thirds of the necessary of gas from Russia, at a price which grew constantly over the last years and which was expected to reach an average of 415 dollars per thousand of cubic metres this year.
