Oettinger (EC): Inauguration of Brazi power plant is a good message to investors

Inauguration of the power plant at Brazi (Prahova county, south of the country) is a good message for investors in Romania, said Günther Oettinger, European Commissioner for Energy, in a meeting with Prime Minister Victor Ponta, informs a government press release, sent on Tuesday.

According to the European Commissioner, further energy market liberalization will lead to an increased Romania's energy independence.

'Prime Minister Victor Ponta assured the European official that Romania will support the European energy strategy and presented multiple legislative transformations adopted by Romania in recent months, to align with European requirements. At the same time, the Executive's head added that the energy sector has the potential to become one of the key engines of economic recovery, the Romanian state making every effort to ensure the diversification of energy sources and continuation of structural reforms in this area ', reads the cited document.

Prime Minister Victor Ponta met on Tuesday, at Victoria Palace, a delegation headed by Günther Oettinger, the European Commissioner for Energy. Attending the talks there were also Rodin Traicu, Secretary of State in the Ministry of Economy, Commerce and Business Environment, Ioan Dan Gheorghiu, adviser to the Prime Minister and Mihnea Constantinescu, state advisor to the Prime Minister.

PM Ponta: By opening the Brazi power plant, we show our determination to support energy investments

 

Romania is determined to use its energy potential, to boost investments in this domain and to have an open and competitive market, Prime Minister Victor Ponta said on Tuesday at the inauguration of the Brazi-based power plant, the county of Prahova (southern Romania).

Ponta said that several important decisions were taken this year, such as the adoption of the legislative package in the energy domain. He also referred to the desideratum of the Government to have a performing management in companies, a fair competition, at the same time expressing the support for investments in the energy field.

Victor Ponta said that any government of Romania has the obligation to support the investors who do not withdraw their profit from the country. He admitted that sometimes he tends to slam Petrom company for hiking prices for petrol or diesel fuel, but he is aware of the company's significant contribution to Romania's budget.

EU Commissioner for Energy Gunther Oettinger, US Ambassador to Bucharest Mark Gitenstein, as well as Vice President of the European Investment Bank Mihai Tanasescu attended the opening ceremony.

Petrom reported that the power plant has a high efficiency, namely that it uses half of the gas quantity which is used by any other power plant in Romania, in order to generate the same electricity quantity. In addition, the plant generates lower CO2 emissions.
