Nuclearelectrica signs memorandum to evaluate development of small modular reactors in Romania
Nuclearelectrica signed a Memorandum with NuScale Power for an exchange of technical and economic information on the construction of small modular reactors (SMR), Nuclearelectrica informs in a press release.
The purpose of the document is the evaluation of development, authorization and construction of SMR, as a long term potential solution for Romania.
According to the press release, this accord represents a sign of Romania's interest in new, last generation nuclear technologies, which will complete and later on replace the present generations of nuclear reactors.
Nuclear energy supplies 20% of domestic consumption in Romania and SNN is the only operator of a nuclear plant in Romania.
SMR technology of NuScale is the first and only one at global level undergoing a certification evaluation of the project by the National Regulation Commission (NRC) in the United States. NuScale also signed Memorandum for the evaluation of SMR technology with Jordan and Canada.
NuScale develops a nuclear plant based on modular reactors with light water to supply electricity, and thermal heating. SMR is based on a modular construction made by NuScale, able to generate 60MW of electricity by using a safe version, of small dimensions and scaling reactor technology with under pressure water. The majority shareholder of NuScale is Fluor Corporation, a global engineering, procurement and construction company with a tradition of 60 years in the commercial nuclear industry.
Nuclearelectrica operates Cernavoda nuclear plant, where two Candu6 reactors are running with a total power of 1,400 MW. They ensure about 20% of the national electricity production.
Reactor 1 was commissioned in 1996 and Unit 2 in 2007.
