Natural gas imported in the first seven months of 2015, down by 79.5pct
Romania imported a usable natural gas quantity of 66,900 tonnes of oil equivalent (toe) in the first seven months of 2015, down by 79.5pct (259,300 toe) year on year, according to the data centralized by the National Statistics Institute (INS).
The domestic natural gas production exceeded, in the first seven months of this year, 5 million toe, by 62.800 toe (1.2pct) below that recorded in the same period of 2014.
According to the INS, the imports of usable natural gas amounted in 2014 to 447,400 toe, by 61.5pct (714,100 toe) lower than those in 2013. Also, the domestic natural gas production totaled over 8.675 million toe, by 73.900 toe (0.9pct) more than that reported in the previous year.
Romania's 2015 - 2035 Draft Energy Strategy shows that Romania has the largest reserves of natural gas in Central and Eastern Europe, with certain reserves of 1,600 TWh.
''At an annual average production in Romania (of 11 billion cubic meters of natural gas) and given a constant annual decline by 5pct in the certain natural gas reserves, and a replacement rate of natural gas reserves by 80pct, one may consider that the current natural gas reserves could run out in a period of some 14 years,'' reads the Energy Strategy.
