Minister Lucia Varga announces study of impact on shale gas

Minister for Water, Forests and Fisheries, Lucia Varga, on Friday announced in Oradea (western Romania) that she ordered the Ministry she leads to conduct a study to assess the impact the exploration and exploitation of the shale gas would have primarily on groundwater resources, including geothermal water.

'Geothermal water represents a great potential and it should be exploited [..] What can I tell you about the exploitation of the shale gas? That I know there are many concerns about it. However, I, as authority, I must take a decision while knowing exactly how things are. Therefore, I can not say whether they do have an impact on the environment or do not right now, for all I saw there were debated the pros and cons depending on various interests,' said Minister Varga.

She also mentioned that she has commissioned a study to assess the impact of this activity primarily on groundwater resources, but also on geothermal water. The study will be completed this year, based on recommendations of which the water management it will make a decision related to whether or not to authorize the exploitation of the shale gas.
