Eurostat: Romania ranks 7th in EU according to share of renewable energy consumption in 2016
Romania ranks 7th among the European Union member states in terms of the share of renewable energy sources in gross final consumption in 2016, according to data released on Friday by the EU's statistics office Eurostat.
The highest share of renewable energy sources in gross final energy consumption in 2016 was recorded in Austria (72.6 percent), Sweden (64.9 percent), Portugal (54.1 percent), Denmark (53.7 percent), Latvia (61.3 percent), Croatia (46.7 percent) and Romania (42.7 percent). At the opposite end of the scale, the lowest shares were registered in Malta (6 percent), Luxembourg and Hungary (both 7 percent) and Cyprus (9 percent).
In 2016, electricity generated from renewable sources contributed more than one quarter (30 percent) to the total EU gross electricity consumption. According to Eurostat, the most important renewable energy sources are: hydro power, wind power, solar energy, geothermal energy, biogas and waste from renewable sources.
