Contract for construction of Iasi-Ungheni gas pipeline
The contract for the construction of a gas pipeline that will connect Romania and the Republic of Moldova, between Iasi - Ungheni, was signed on Thursday, according to a press release from the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Administration.
The project is part of the Joint Operational Programme 'Romania - Ukraine - Republic of Moldova 2007-2013' and will be implemented by the National Agency for Mineral Resources of Romania, as project leader, in partnership with the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Moldova.
The project has an implementation period of 17 months and aims at ensuring a high level of energy security to the Republic of Moldova and to the eastern part of Romania, through diversification of gas supply sources.
'The ultimate beneficiaries of this project are economic agents, households, providers of essential social services (such as medical care or child care), providers of educational activities or other social services and charities', says the press release.
The total budget is 26.4 million euros, of which 7 million euros, or 26.42 percent, is the financial contribution of the European Union via the Joint Operational Programme 'Romania-Ukraine-Republic of Moldova 2007-2013', funded through the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument.
Minister for Energy Constantin Nita said in July, after a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economy of the Republic of Moldova Valeriu Lazar, that Romania and the Republic of Moldova governments plan to see the works on Iasi - Ungheni gas pipeline ready until the end of the year.
We want the Iasi - Ungheni gas pipeline to turn operational early next year. This investment targets the transport of 500 million cubic meters of gas in the first phase, followed by the construction of a compression station in the next phase. The under-crossing section of the bridge will be 700 meters long, the pipeline going to have a length 16 km on the Romanian side and about 10 km in the Republic of Moldova's territory ', Constantin Nita also said.
According to him, the pipeline final capacity is of 1.5 billion cubic meters of gas, more than the 1.3 billion cubic meters representing the consumption needs of the Republic of Moldova.
In turn, Valeriu Lazar pointed out that an internal pipeline in the Republic of Moldova is to be built, set to make a connection between Ungheni and Chisinau.
