Azomures announces the temporary suspension of ammonia production due to the price of natural gas

The Azomures unit has announced the temporary suspension of ammonia production due to the price of natural gas, saying that they will produce fertilisers until the depletion of existing ammonia stock. The production was already suspended from the same reason in December 2021, being resumed in April this year. At that moment, the company said that ‘ supply with natural gas is difficult, with levels of price which lead to high prices for fertilisers, even with the help of the government’.

The quoted source mentions that Azomures will produce fertilisers, until the depletion of the existing ammonia stock, but similar decisions were taken by other companies in Europe, the cause being the same, the unsustainable price from an economic point of view.

‘In Romania we continue the dialogue with the governmental authorities to apply the economic aid offered by the European Union, applied in many European countries. For example, Bulgaria offers the industry a capped price, of 72 euro MWh. Until now, Romania has not used the aid scheme for the energy intensive industries, although the European legal framework is available’Harri Kiiski, the general manager of Azomures said.

The Azomures unit said that they do not take into account technical unemployment.

Azomures is the most important producer of fertilisers for agriculture in Romania. Azomures supplies raw materials (urea and melamin) for several industrial objectives in Romania. The annual production (in normal functioning conditions) is 1.6 million tons of fertilisers, approximately 75% of the production being destined to Romanian farms.

Azomures is part of the Swiss group Ameropa, one of the biggest traders of fertilisers and grains at global level.
