Vegetable resources advanced nearly 9 percent in 2013/2014
Romania's total vegetable resources advanced nearly 9 percent in 2013/2014 to 4.4 million tonnes, but were 4.5 percent down from 2011/2012, according to a report of the National Institute of Statistics (INS) released on Wednesday.
The INS analyzed the vegetable resources over 2009 through 2014; the best year was 2011/2012 with 4.58 million tonnes.
Vegetables and vegetable products imports (including melons) receded by 13.6pct from a peak of 488,500 tonnes in 2012/2013 to 422,000 in 2013/2014, which was still 3.1pct above the minimum of 409,400 tonnes in 2008/2009. In 2013/2014, imports contributed 9.6pct to the overall vegetable resources of the country.
Exports of these products peaked in 2013/2014, at three times the minimum of 29,500 tonnes in 2008/2009. The 2013/2014 figure was 83,600 tonnes, 24pct above the previous year and 18.5pct above 2011/2012.
The domestic consumption of vegetable (including the derivate products and the melons) was 4.8pct lower in 2013/2014, compared to the 2011/2012 maximum for the considered period, and 8.7pct above the 2012/2013 minimum. Human consumption still represented more than 80 percent of the total.
INS data show human consumption of vegetables of 3.708 million tonnes in 2011/2012, 3.287 million tonnes in 2012/2013, and 3.559 million tonnes in 2013/2014.
According to the methodological norms, the reference period for these statistics is the marketing campaign year from July 1 through June 30 the next year, covering the period of use of most of the vegetable products.
