Non-resident tourists to Romania have spent on average 2,960 lei/person (around 660 euro) in the first quarter of 2015; most of them came for business, according to the data released on Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
The total number of non-residents hosted in the collective tourist accommodations from January through March 2015 reached 355,900, and they have spent 1.05 billion lei (1 euro=4.4799 lei).
According to the INS data, the non-resident tourists have come to Romania for business mainly - to participate in congresses, conventions, courses, fairs and exhibitions (64.7pct of the total amount of non-resident tourists), and the expenses of this category represented 68.9pct of the total.
The second reason of the non-resident tourists' stays in Romania were the trips for private purposes (35.3pct of total number of non-resident tourists), especially holiday travels (59.5pct). Travels for private purpose include trips for holidays, shopping, cultural and sports events, visits to friends and relatives, medical treatment, religion, transit and other activities.
Out of the tourists' total business expenditure, the biggest proportion goes to the accommodation expenses (54.1pct), the accommodation with breakfast being preferred in particular (91.5pct). The expenses of the non-resident tourists in restaurants and bars were 16.4pct, while those in shopping amounted to 12.8pct. Of the shopping expenditures total, 34.7pct were the expenses for buying food and drinks, followed by purchases of clothes and footwear - 33.9pct. The car rental represented 64.8pct of the transportation total expenses, and the expenditure for museum, tourist objectives, zoological /botanical gardens entrance tickets represented 41pct of the leisure expenditure.
Out of the total of the non-residents arrived to Romania, 49.5pct have organized their staying through tourism agencies, while 29.2pct have organized their holiday by themselves.
The main transportation means used by the non-resident tourists to arrive to Romania were planes (83.5pct of total tourists' number). Some 11.6pct have arrived in their own car, some 4.3pct in buses, others (0.6pct) used other means (trains, river boats, rented cars, motorcycles, etc.)
