Tunnels to link North Railway station to other Bucharest-based stations

Governmental Decision on Wednesday April 11 approved the Understanding Memorandum between Romania's Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure and the Belgian Transport Ministry on the cooperation in infrastructure works to upgrade, rehabilitate and expand Bucharest area's infrastructure and transportation, signed in Bucharest, on Sept 22, 2011.

The Memorandum, stipulates, inter alia, the modernization of Bucharest's railway infrastructure, and tunnels to connect the North Railway Station with South and the Obor Railway stations.

It sets up the legal framework for the direct pubic private partnership between the Romanian and the Belgian Transport Ministries, reads Governmental release to Agerpres.

The works encompass the North Railway Station area, the most important of the Pan-European railway Corridors 4th and 9th.

Bucharest area will have all the most modern railway equipment, facilities and infrastructure elements, which is to simplify and fluidize the railway traffic from Chitila (northern Bucharest) to the Progresul Railway Station, and tunnels will link the North Railway Station to the Obor and the South railway stations, changing the North Railway Station from a terminal into a direct connection.

The Romanian and the Belgian Transport Ministry will directly support the executive the technical and the administrative enactment of the project, supplying mutual aid and the information required to the achievement of the Memorandum, in full compliance with the relevant laws.

Through joint efforts, both ministries will back up the subordinated companies to access funds to implement the Understanding Memorandum, and will ask funds from the international financial institutions, says the release.
