Trade: Romanians prefer expensive phones

Premium phone sales, whose prices exceed 400 euros, generated about 30% of local market value for smart phones in the first 6 months of the year, amounting to 300 million euros.

Premium smart phone sales reached about 90 million euros in the first semester of the year, 40% more than in the same period of 2015, according to Samsung Romania estimates.

Samsung Romania officials estimate that premium smart phone sales will continue to grow by at least 30% this year.

“We estimate that the share of the premium segment will reach 40% of total smart phone market by the end of the year. As quantity, the share will be between 15% and 20%, about 400,000- 500,000 units”, said Cristian Cojocaru, the head of telecommunications division within Samsung Romania.

In the first 6 months of the year, the local smart phone market was 1.5 million units of 300 million euros. As quantity, the increase compared to the same period of the previous year was 20% and 30% in value. Smart phone sales generate over 90% of overall mobile phone deliveries in Romania.

“The average price of the smart phone market has grown since last year, which proves the consumers’ orientation toward the mid and high segments,” Cojocaru added.

The whole smart phone market will reach 4.2 million units by the end of the year, on the rise by 20% compared to 2015, while the value of sales will register an advance of 30% to 750 million euros.
