Trade: Opinion poll: What Romanians think about supermarkets

Two thirds of Romanians consider that supermarkets help them save, when the price is the main element in choosing the shopping p0lace in the case of three thirds of participants in a study made by INSCOP at the demand of the association of big retailers.

Big stores represent the favorite shopping place for 83.6% of people interviewed whole 65.2% Romanians shop at nearby stores and 45.2% also use food markets.

Big stores, like hypermarkets, cash& carry, supermarkets and discount stores are appreciated by 89% of participants in the study, 56.6% having a good opinion and 32.4% a very good opinion.

Price continues to be the prime element in choosing the place for shopping(75.2%), while for 65.1% of Romanians the main criterion is product quality. For 58% the distance to their home counts a lot, the study made by AMRCR over August 27-September 7, 2015 shows.

About three thirds of Romanians (74.4%) see supermarkets as catalysts for economy and consider they stimulate the development of towns (74.4%). 82.6% consider that supermarkets create jobs at local level, while 10.7% think that on the contrary they destroy them.6.7% did not know what to answer.

At the same time, 54.65% of people interviewed consider that supermarkets offer bigger salaries to employees than small shops, while 18.4% do not agree with that and 27% abstain.

Most respondents (64.9%) consider that supermarkets help them save while 22.8% think they make them poor and 12.3% have no opinion.

Over 70% of Romanians consider that supermarkets sell cheaper products than small shops or than markets and 84.1% say more products at lower prices than in shops can be found.

Two thirds of respondents consider that Romanian foodstuff are better quality than foreign ones, while 27% think they are comparable in quality, while only 4.6% say Romanian products are worse.

39.7% of Romanians say Romanian foodstuff is as expensive as foreign ones, while 28.8% consider local products are even more expensive.

According to the opinion poll 44.3% of respondents consider supermarkets help local producers, while 41.5% think they do not help them and 14.3% do not have an opinion yet.

The study showed that Romanians have different opinions about what “Romanian product”means. 36% say a Romanian product is the one made according to a Romanian recipe 26.6% say this category goes into any product made in Romania, regardless of the origin of ingredients, name and brand, while 21.6% consider the Romanian product is the traditional one and for 12.9% the Romanian product is the one with a Romanian name.

According to the study, 45.6% of respondents say VAT reduction for food is seen in the drop of prices in supermarkets, while only 26.1% of small shops dropped prices for the same reason.

The measure of closing down supermarkets in weekends is not appreciated by people, most of them (52.6%) considering they could increase shopping expenses on one hand and job losses on the other hand (54.8%). Moreover, producers of perishable goods will suffer , say 61.4% of respondents as well as transport companies (57.1%). A fifth of Romanians go shopping in weekends for food, hygiene and cleaning products compared to 5% who buy from small shops and 11.9% from markets.

In case supermarkets closed on weekends, most people (45.2%) declare they would buy from the same place during the week and only 20.7% would go to small shops and 6.1% to markets.

About 70% of Romanians think the state/parliament/town hall should not intervene in the functioning timetable of supermarkets while 20.5% think they should and 10.2% do not know, would not answer in the context in which 89.9% of respondents consider the present timetable suitable.

Most Romanians (75.2%) reject the idea of relocating supermarkets outside towns , a measure generating difficulties in supplying people. 57.3% of respondents consider that supermarkets sell healthy and valid products (71.3%).

The study was made by home interviews on 1,220 people, the error being +/- 2.8%.
