Trade balance deficit with foodstuff grew by 26% in first 7 months
Romania exported foodstuff of over 3.06 billion euros in the first 7 months of 2015, on the rise by 14.1% against the same period of 2014, while imports recorded an advance of 14.4% to 3.13 billion euros, according to data of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development( MADR) . In these conditions, in the first 7 months of 2015, the deficit of the balance of trade with foodstuff was 69.4 million euros, growing by 14.3 million euros (+26%) against the level registered in 2014.
Corn and cigarettes brought the largest incomes over January-July 2015, followed by wheat, rape seeds and barley. Exports included 3,21 million tons of corn of 618.5 million euros, compared to 1.09 million tons (332.2 million euros) in 2014, as well as 28,800 tons of cigars and cigarettes (incomes of 511.2 million euros) against 22,000 tons (377.2 million euros) in the same period of 2014.
The quantity of exported wheat totalled 1.6 million tons (330.2 million euros) over January-July 2015, against 2.12 million tons (430.6 million euros) in 2014, marking a quantity decline of 529,400 tons (-24.9%). Incomes obtained were lower by 100 million euros compared to the same period of the previous year.
At the same time, rape seeds -456,500 tons - were sold for 172,6 million euros this year, compared to 180.9 million euros obtained in the same period of 2014 but for 521,700 tons.
According to MADR statistics, additional incomes were obtained from exports of rice (+53.2 million euros), soy seeds (+15.6 million euros), sunflower oil (+13.4 million euros) beef meat (+10.9 million euros) and poultry meat (+9.1 million euros). On the other hand, the mentioned period recorded the lowest incomes from exports of sunflower seeds (-39.4 million euros) and live animals - cattle, sheep or goats (-30.1 million euros).
Reported to the first 7 months of 2014, imports advanced for most foodstuff groups. Drops were recorded for live animals - pigs (-13.9 million euros), chicken meat (-6.3 million euros) on the background of lower prices, although the imported quantity grew by 28,300 tons.
“The growing tendency of the trade excess growth maintained, resulting from exchanges of foodstuff with third countries, for 569.6 million euros, being higher by 84.8 million euros compared to 2014. The global result of Romania’s foodstuff trade was strongly affected by the commercial deficit of EU exchanges, which deepened to 639 million euros, 99.1 millions higher compared to 2014,”the analysis shows.
EU remained Romania’s main partner for farming trade, deliveries of foodstuff to that destination representing 61.7%, while purchases from EU member states were of 80.8%.
