Tourism : The tourists’ overnight stays in the establishments of tourists’ reception, up 3.8pct between January-July 2018

Compared to the corresponding month of the previous year, the arrivals in the establishments of tourists’ reception with functions of tourists’ accommodation increased by 2.8 %, while the overnight stays increased by 2.9% in July 2018.

Compared to July 2017, in July 2018 customs registered an increase in the arrivals of foreign visitors of 7.0 % and an increase of 8.3% in the departures abroad of the Romanian visitors.

Over 6.858 million arrivals were recorded in Romania's tourist accommodation establishments in the first seven months of 2018, increasing by 3.8 percent compared to the similar period of last year, with Romanian tourists arrivals accounting for 76.8 percent, the data of the National Institute of Statistics (INS) sent on Tuesday informs.

Most arrivals of foreign tourists were those residing in Europe (74.4 percent of all foreign tourists), most of them came from Germany (182,800), Israel (153,300) and Italy (133,600).

Overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments in the first seven months of 2018 amounted to more than 14.618 million, up 2.6 percent compared to the similar period of 2017. 

Out of the total number of overnight stays, those of the Romanian tourists in the tourist accommodation units accounted for 79.2 percent, while the overnight stays of foreign tourists accounted for 20.8 percent. In respect to the overnight stays of foreign tourists in tourist accommodation units, the largest share was held by those coming from Europe (73.2 percent of the total foreign tourists), and of these 83.8 percent were from the European Union member states.

The average length of stay was 2.2 days for Romanian tourists and 1.9 days for foreign tourists. The net occupancy rate of accommodation places was 29.3 percent per total tourist accommodation structures, up 0.5 percentage points from the first seven months of 2017.

Higher rates of occupancy during 1 January - 31 July 2018 were registered in hotels (37.1 percent), bungalows (24.5 percent), tourist villas (22.9 percent), accommodation on boats (22.6 percent), halting place (22 percent), hostels (21.6 percent) and tourist guesthouses (19.3 percent).

Depending on the county, in the first seven months of 2018, the number of tourists' arrivals at the tourist accommodation establishments with tourist accommodation functions recorded higher values in Bucharest (1.176 million), Brasov (729,800), Constanta (660,500) and Cluj (359,000) and the number of overnight stays of tourists registered higher values in Bucharest (1.912 million), Brasov (1.432 million), Constanta (2.413 million) and Cluj (668,700).

The arrivals of foreign visitors to Romania, registered at border crossing points, were over 6.549 million in the reference period, up 7 percent compared to the same period of 2017. Most foreign visitors came from countries situated in Europe (92.3 percent). Of the total arrivals of foreign visitors to Romania, 49.8 percent came from the European Union states. Out of the EU member states, most arrivals were registered in Bulgaria (27.1 percent), Hungary (26.8 percent), Germany (8.3 percent), Italy (7.8 percent), Poland (5.5 percent), France (4 percent) and the UK (3.8 percent).

On the other hand, the number of Romanian visitors abroad, registered at the border crossings points stood at 11.795 million, up 4.6 percent compared to the similar period of 2017. The means of road transport were most used for traveling abroad, accounting for 68.4 percent of the total number of departures.

In July 2018, as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year, the arrivals at tourist accommodation units increased by 2.8 percent, to 1.594 million, and overnight stays increased by 2.9 percent, up to 4.257 million.

The net occupancy rate of accommodation places in July 2018 was 44 percent on total tourist accommodation establishments, increasing by 0.4 percentage points compared to July 2017.

The arrivals of foreign visitors to Romania, registered at the border crossing points, were 1.442 million in July 2018, up 7 percent against July 2017. Most of the foreign visitors came from countries situated in Europe (91.7 percent). Of the total arrivals of foreign visitors to Romania, 45.8 percent came from the European Union member states.
