Tourism : The non-resident tourists arrived in Romania in Quarter I 2017 spent on average 2311.5 lei/person

In Q1 2017, the non-resident tourists who arrived in Romania spent on average 2,311.5 lei per person, according to data with the National Institute of Statistics (INS) released on Friday.
The number or non-resident tourists in hotels and similar establishments stood at 446,000, and their expenditure amounted to 1.03 billion lei overall.
Non-resident tourists came to Romania especially for business and to attend congresses, conferences, courses, fairs and exhibitions (65.5 percent of the total number of non-resident tourists), with their expenditure being 66.1 percent of the total.
The second reason of the non-resident tourists' stay in Romania was the travels for particular purpose (34.5 percent of the total number of non-resident tourists), out of which the holiday travel being highlighted (60.4 percent). The travels for particular purpose include travels for holidays, shopping, cultural and sports events, visit friends and relatives, medical treatment, religion, transit and other activities.
Of the overall expenditures for businesses, the highest share is represented by accommodation expenditure (52.7 percent), with accommodation and breakfast included being particularly preferred (89.8 percent). The expenditure of non-resident tourists in restaurants and bars was 11.7 percent. Of the total expenditure for shopping, 38.9 percent represented the expenses for purchasing food and beverages, followed by expenses for purchasing presents and souvenirs 36.4 percent. The expenses with car rentals had a share of 51.5 percent of the total expenditure for transport, while the expenditure for the access to museums, sights, zoological / botanical gardens accounted for 50.7 percent of the total expenditure for recreation expenses.
Out of the total non-resident tourists who arrived in Romania, 47.5 percent had organised their stay through travel agencies and 34.2 percent had organized their stay by themselves.
The main means of transportation used by the non-resident tourists arriving in Romania was the plane (81.1 percent of the total number of tourists). 11.4 percent of the tourists used their own vehicles, 5.6 percent used coaches and buses and 1.9 percent used other means of transportation (train, riverboats, car rentals, motorcycles etc.).
