Tourism : Romania ranks 154th in the world for tourism contribution to GDP
In 2013 tourism had an overall contribution of 5.1% of GDP, which places Romania 154th in the world out of 184 countries, behind Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovakia, according to a report of the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC).
The overall contribution of tourism to GDP includes the business directly generated by this activity, such as accommodation, transport, attractions, entertainment, purchases, food expenses and investments in the field of tourism and hospitality, to which are added indirect incomes such as those of suppliers who serve projects or facilities in tourism and expenses generated in economy by employees in the field.
Tourism had last year an overall contribution of 33.1 billion lei (9.9 billion dollars) to Romania’s GDP, of which 10.5 billion lei (3.2 billion dollars) represent direct contribution, according to WTTC data.
The Council anticipates a 5.4% growth of overall contribution of tourism to GDP in 2014, followed by an average increase rate of 3.8% per year until 2024 to 50.8 billion lei.
In 2013 tourism directly ensured 212,500 jobs in Romania and the total contribution to the labour market is estimated to be 500,500 jobs.Thus Romania ranks 154th out of 184 countries for the contribution of tourism to GDP and the situation is not likely to change too soon considering the 115th position in point of long term prognosis between 2014 and 2024.
Last year leisure tourism generated 68.8% of contribution to GDP, the rest of 31.2% representing business tourism. AT the same time, foreign visitors generated 42.1% of travel business in 2013, compared to 57.9% domestic tourism.
With a 5.1% total contribution of tourism to GDP, Romania ranks last in Europe, behind Albania (16.7%of GDP), Bulgaria (13.3%), Hungary (10.6%), Czech Republic (8.4%) and Slovakia (6%). The total contribution of tourism to jobs also ranks Romania last among neighbor countries and 136th in the world.
