Tourism : Half of hotel rooms in Romania are closed
Over half of hotel rooms in Romania- more than 50,000, have been under preservation in past years, because of the crisis, while 5,000 maids were fired, Mohammad Murad, the president of FPTR told Mediafax. In Romanian hotels there are 180,000 classified accommodations, with over 100,000 rooms.
“Considering that last year the occupation degree was around 30%, hotels function at half their capacity. That is why part of the rooms are being preserved to avoid additional expenses. I think that over 50% of hotel rooms are being preserved. A chamber maid does ten rooms and 5,000 maids have been fired,” Murad said at the opening of Romania’s Tourism Fair.
The president of FPTR says that if a hotel has bank credits with an occupation degree under 30% it starts registering losses. Without credits a hotel can bear without losses a 25% occupation degree.
According to MDRT there are 1326 hotels accommodating 175,149 persons (about 100,000 rooms).
Hotels in Romania rank last in Europe according to the occupation degree in summer time. Romania ranks last in classification about the share of foreigners , causes being the low flow of business tourists, the bad image abroad, high prices and evasion.
According to Eurostat data, the occupation degree of accommodation units in Romania was 32.9% last summer, being followed only by Lithuania with 31.6%.With a rate of 14.7% of non residents from total number of tourists, Romania is last in Europe, after Germany with 21.3% and Sweden – 27.2%.
