Tourism: Chernobyl becomes tourist attraction for Romanians
A travel agency in Romania included in its Fall offer a trip to Chernobyl, the town where the biggest nuclear catastrophe took place in 1986. The price of a package is 395 euros and also includes a radiation badge, meant to show participants there is no danger.
Lucian Badircea, CEO of Iri Travel, declared that he got the idea of organizing trips to Chernobyl following the success recorded by the tv series broadcast by HBO.
“There is world wide interest in the so-called black tourism. The first trip is scheduled for April 28, 2020. There have been some questions and bookings so far. We will leave by coach and we can increase the number of seats anytime, Badircea said.
He added that a visit to the former nuclear plant does not involve any risks for tourists, radiation level in the area 160 times lower than in the case of an x-ray.
“We offer accommodation in Chisinau and Kiev, the first night in Chisinau and two others in Kiev. There will be a local guide. The visit to Chernobyl last a day and each participant will receive radiation badges to have a permanent index of radiation. During the tour, participants will be exposed to a radiation dose 160 lower than that of a normal x-ray picture and 3,600 lower than a CT body scan. So there is no radiation danger.”
The trip also includes a visit to the town of Pripyat, abandoned in 1986, a tour of the secret area Chernobyl – 2 Gia- ARC 1 huge antennas, the place which dealt with long range missiles.
