Telecom.IT: Third generation broadband covers 90pct of Romania's territory

The internet broadband currently covers 90 percent of Romania's territory, while 64 percent of those not using the internet generally say they do not need this service, National Communications Administrative and Regulatory Authority (ANCOM) Director Gheorghe Rusen told a specialist conference on Monday.

'The broadband cover in Romania is of the third generation and is present in 90 percent of the territory. We also have 4G cover, high enough compared with the European average, standing at 26 percent. I believe the competition is very sharp in Romania. We have six operators in the mobile area and 900 operators of fixed broadband services,' Rusen said.

'64 percent of those not using internet say they do not need this service and 50 percent of them say it is too expensive. Also, 34 percent use the internet to create websites. Hence, the challenge is to make the consumer consume top services,' Gheorghe Rusen said.

From the ANCOM official data, released in the beginning of October, the communication services in Romania currently connect four million subscribers to the fixed telephony and over 25.5 million subscribers to the mobile telephony, and almost half of the households of Romania have a fixed interned connection and over 85 percent of them have a subscription to audio-visual programmes retransmission.

Business Review publication on Monday organises the conference on the topic 'Focus on Telecom,' tackling the trends on the relevant market and the impact of the new technologies on the business environment.
