Telecom.IT: About 15 million connections affected by security incidents in telecommunications in 2018
About 15 million connections were affected in 2018 by security incidents that had in view the security and integrity of electronic communications networks and services, most of them being about mobile telephony and text messages, over 7.6 million connections, according to data published by ANCOM.
According to data reported by telecommunication service suppliers about incidents that affected the security and integrity of electronic communication networks and services, 556 incidents with significant impact on the security and integrity of electronic communication networks and services in 2018, on the rise by 66% against 2017.
These reports show that last year, an incident with significant impact on the security and integrity of electronic communication networks and services affected an average of 24,252 connections , a dropping number against 2017, when 29,755 connections affected by an incident were registered .
According to ANCOM, incidents affected about 15 million connections. Most connections affected by significant incidents are those of mobile telephony and text messages (over 7.6 million connections), followed by mobile Internet services (4.7 million connections), fixed telephony (over 1 million connections) and fixed Internet (about 1 million connections). The least affected connections were those of sending audio-visual programs (438,000 connections).
According to the geographic distribution of incidents, Constanta was the most affected county with 64 network events, followed by Dolj, where 57 incidents were recorded, Teleorman (55) and Olt (54).
On the other hand, counties less affected were Ialomita (9 incidents), Bihor and Salaj (11 each), and 166 incidents had impact on at least 2 counties.
Data supplied to ANCOM by operators show that in 2018, most incidents (86%) were caused by external factors. The number of incidents triggered by and external cause doubled to 243 (in 2017), 477 (2018). ANCOM report on significant incidents that affected the security and integrity of electronic communication networks and services in 2018 was made based on data offered by suppliers.
