Telecom.IT: 65% of households have Internet access in 2016

 

About 65% of households in Romania had in 2016 home Internet access, 65.4% of them in the urban area and 34.6% in the rural area, according to INS reports.

Compared to 2015, the share of households with Internet access has grown by 4%.

About 70% of people aged between 16 and 74 used the Internet in 2016. Compared to 2015, the share of Internet users aged between 16 and 74 has grown by 1.2%, reaching 10.6 people, according to results of an INS investigation on people’s access to ITC in households.

Most people aged between 16 and 34 (91.9%) use the internet and the percentage drops with the age. The share of people between 55 and 75 years old reach only 38.4%.

Of all people in the 16-74 age category, 70% of them used the Internet, of whom 85.3% in the last three months. 71% of current users use the Internet daily or almost daily.

The share of men who have ever used the Internet (72.2%) is higher than that of women (67.2%), according to INS.

At territorial level Internet connection in 2016 was wider spread in Bucharest-Ilfov households (over 4 out of 5 households have Internet access at home), followed by areas in the North-West, West, South-West Oltenia, Center and South-East. The lowest share of households with Internet connection are in South Muntenia (58%) and North-East (57.1%).

The share of people who used the Internet most (88.4%) was in Bucharest-Ilfov, followed at greater distance, by North-Western and Centre areas (72%), the other regions recording 70%.

In point of household size, there is a relation between the number of people in the household and the increased interest in Internet connection. In 2016, over 32% of households with one person had home Internet. About 56% of households with two persons have home Internet access 4.5% more than in 2015, while households with at least 3 persons have over 87% compared to 83% in 2015.

The types of connections used to access home Internet are fixed broadband connections (86.6%), followed at great distance by mobile broadband connections (43.2%) and narrowband connections (10.3%).

Most households that chose fixed broadband connections in 2016 come from Bucharest-Ilfov (16.2%), North-East and North-West (13.8% each) and South-Muntenia (13.4%). By means of mobile broadband connections, households in South Muntenia (15.5%), Bucharest Ilfov (14.9%) and South-East (14.3%) were mostly connected.
