Telecom. IT: 4.8 million fixed Internet connections in 2017

The total number of fixed Internet connections reached 4.8 millions in Romania in 2017, on the rise by 7%. The coverage rate was 58%, 4% more than the previous year, according to statistics of the National Authority for Communications Management and Regulations (ANCOM), released on Friday.

According to the source, there was a total traffic of 5.1 million TB on fixed Internet segment in 2017, while the average monthly consumption per connection was 92 GB, reaching 1.1 millions, while most fixed Internet connections (67%) allow speeds of at least 100 Mbps, 11% between 30-100 Mbps, 13% between 10-30 Mbps and only 9% are connections with speeds up to 10Mbps.

ANCOM data show that the penetration rate of fixed Internet per 100 households was 58%, on the rise by 4% every year.

According to the overall connection number for fixed Internet, the market leader had a share of 49% at the end of 2017, the main competitor had 21%, the next one 13% while the rest of suppliers had 17%.

Statistics say that the ratio between urban and rural for fixed Internet shows an important increase of 13%, compared to 2016. The number of fixed Internet connections in the rural area reached 1.4 millions, while in the urban area the increase was slower - 5%, up to 3.4 millions. In this segment, the coverage rate was 71% urban and 41% rural.

In use of fixed phones continued to drop significantly in 2017. There were drops both in the number of access lines (-5%, to 3.9 millions), especially at voice traffic level (-16%, to 2.7 billion minutes). The monthly traffic average of a fixed line reached 57 minutes, 6 minutes less that the 2016 average.

At the same time, according to the number of access lines, the market leader had a share of 43% on December 31, 2017, the next competitor 33%, the next one 14%, the other suppliers 10%.

For voice traffic, the market leader had a share of 48%, the main competitor 28%, the next one 7%, the others 16%.

Statistic data report on the electronic communication market in Romania for 2017 is made by ANCOM, based on semestrial statistics reported by suppliers.
