Agriculture: Corn and sunflower grown on 3.5 million ha

The area cultivated this year with corn and sunflower occupied more than half of the overall area of 6 million ha, placing Romania first in EU in point of yields obtained in 2017.

According to  the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR)6data, corn was sown on 96.22% (2.368 million ha) of the scheduled area until May 11, 2018, while sunflower exceeded 97% of area, with 1.01 million ha. By the mentioned date, 128,803 spring oat had been sowed (96%), 83,140 ha (100.96%) spring barley, 152,768 ha (90.12%) soy, 193,688 ha (93.55%) vegetables, 142,718 ha (94%) autumn potatoes, 27,624 ha (86%) sugar beet and 108,922 ha (109.39%) green peas had been sown.

Last year, Romania obtained 14.841 million tons of corn, an average of 5.9 tons/ha on an area of 2.49 million ha, about 3.19 million tons of sunflower, an average of 2,738 kg/ha on an area of 1.165 million ha, 10.33 million tons of wheat, rye on an area of 2.1 million ha and an average of 4,873 kg/ha.

In 2017 Romania made 2.7 million tons of cereals, exceeding 1.4 tons per capita.
