Study: Products bought by Romanians from hypermarkets and supermarkets

Food represents over 68% of purchases made by the Romanians in hyper and supermarkets. People from Timis county allocate a high share to these products – 70.4%, while those from Sibiu only 63.8%, according to a study made by RetailZoom in ten of the largest counties.

 

The study analysed sales in the retail networks Carrefour, Cora, MegaImage, Penny Market, Metro, Profi, Billa and Inmedio in Bacau, Timis, Sibiu, Ilfov, Iasi, Brasov, Prahova, Constanta counties and in Bucharest in the first 9 months of the year.

 

At national level, the average share held by foodstuff in Romanians’ purchases was of 68.6%, tobacco 9%, non-food products (clothes, toys, books, electronic and household appliances, etc) 11% and products for babies, house care and cosmetics 11.3%.

 

In the first part of the classification we find people from Bacau (68.2%), Bucharest (68.3%), Brasov (68.3%) and Prahova (68.9%). At the opposite pole we find Sibiu and Iasi counties for whom food represents 65.2%, Cluj with 65.5%, Ilfov – 67.1% and Constanta 67.8%.Non food products have the highest share for people of Iasi -15.4%, Cluj – 13.3%, Brasov -13%, Sibiu -11.9%, Constanta 11.8% and Bucharest 11%. People from Prahova allocate less for non food products -9.8% and are followed by those of Bacau – 10.9% and Timis 10.8%.

 

For baby products, house care products and cosmetics the people from Iasi allocate 12% being followed by Bucharest -11.9%, Brasov, 11.7%, Bacau -11.5% and Cluj – 11.4%.At the opposite pole are people from Timis with 9%. Shares below the average are recorded in Prahova -10.8%, Sibiu 10.5%, Constanta 10.5% and Ilfov 10.1%.

 

The company also analysed in detail what people bought in four of the most important cities in Romania – Bucharest, Brasov, Cluj Napoca and Iasi. In the Capital 18.8% of purchases are represented by fruit and vegetables, 14.1% by dairy products, 14% by meat, 13.8% by beverages, 12.5% by fresh food, 9.8% by alcoholic beverages, 9.8% by sweets and 3.1% by frozen food.

 

In Brasov people buy 21% fruit and vegetables, 12.5% dairy products, 14.8% meat, 13.1% beverages, 10.1% fresh food, 11.9% alcoholic beverages, 7.8% sweets and 3% frozen food. In Cluj people buy 20.4% fruit and vegetables, 14% dairy products, 12.5% meat, 13.5% beverages, 10.6% fresh food, 11.9% alcoholic beverages, 8.2% sweets, 3% frozen food.In Iasi fruit and vegetables represent 22.2%, dairy products 9.7%, meat 12.8%, beverages 12.8%, fresh food 11.8%, alcoholic beverages 12.6%, sweets 7.9% and frozen food 3.7%.
