"It gives me great pleasure to promote Romanian producers and products that have achieved excellence and whose seriousness and quality have gone beyond the borders of the country and stood out everywhere in the world! I congratulate the members of the Association of Sibiu Salami Producers who applied and obtained on February 19 the registration as Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) product and I assure them of my full support. Equally, I encourage all producers of quality products to follow the example of the Association of Sibiu Salami Producers and I assure them of the total openness and involvement of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Permanent Representation Office of Romania to the EU in supporting them!," the Agriculture Minister wrote Thursday on his Facebook page.
Romania has managed to register at European level the 'Sibiu Salami' as product with Protected Geographical Indication, being the second product after Topoloveni Plum Jam in 2011, Agriculture Minister Achim Irimescu told AGERPRES on February 19.
On November 17, 2014, the application for acquiring the PGI name for the 'Sibiu Salami' was submitted to the European Commission by the applying group - the Association of Sibiu Salami Producers, formed of five Romanian meats producers, who make 90pct of the production of Sibiu salami in Romania: Agricola Bacau, Aldis, H&E Reinert, Salsi and Scandia Romania, later on joined also by CrisTim.
According to the Agriculture and Rural Development Ministry (MADR), as many as 1,427 traditional products are guaranteed in the world, of which the EU holds 1,404. Most PGI products are held by Italy (296), France (243), Spain (205), Portugal (139), Greece (106) and Germany (96).
