Infrastructure : Road infrastructure will dominate construction sector in Romania
In the next two years the civil construction sector will be the main growth engine of the building industry in Romania, due to the infrastructure projects financed by EU, the Italian Foreign Trade Institute writes, quoting a study presented by a Polish market research company for Central and Eastern Europe – PRM, according to the Italian financial site portalino.it.
The evaluation made by the study shows that the business figure of the civil construction sector in Romania grew by 16% last year, reaching 35 billion lei (8.3 billion euro), mainly because of projects for road infrastructure, a segment which could preserve the same growing tendency at least until 2015.
Despite the economic decline in Romania in 2009 and 2010, works for road infrastructure did not register significant drops and in 2011 the business volume grew to 18.7 billion lei (4.4 billion euro), incomes 9 times higher than in 2002 and over 20% higher than in 2010. Romania has European cohesion funds of 4.6 billion euro for transports over 2007-2013. Until March 2012, the absorption rate for EU funds for transports was 6%.
Major works under way concern the construction of highway segments, of which 200 km should be completed this year. Until the end of 2012, the Romanian state should select contractors for another 111 km of highway, for which the planned financing of 1.1 billion euro has been ensured.
