Infrastructure: Number of passengers grew by 6.2% in first 9 months of 2016

The number of passengers transported at home and abroad registered a 6.2% increase in the first 9 months of 2016 compared to the same period of 2015, while most passengers travelled by bus locally, according to data centralized by the National Statistics Institute (INS).

During the mentioned period of time, 282.6 million passengers were transported, 4.5% of whom travelled abroad (12.7 million passengers). Road transport holds the biggest share (78.4%), followed by railway transport (17.3%).

Railway passenger transport recorded a negative evolution, both for the number of passengers and for distances compared to January 1- September 30, 2015 (drop of 2.6% and 2.1%). Road transport registered an increase of 7.7% of the number of passengers transported, while distances grew by 8.5% compared to the previous year.

1,700 passengers were transported abroad by sea. River transport recorded 123,000 passengers while their travels registered 6,150,000 km/passengers.

Air transport recorded 12.2 million passengers of whom 11 million passengers chose international flights.

The average transport distance of a passenger was superior in the first 9 months of 2016 in road and railway transport by 0.8% and 0.5% respectively, but recorded a drop of 3.7% in transport on inland rivers.
