Infrastructure : Calin Popescu Tariceanu: Danube-Bucharest Canal project is huge mistake
Senate Speaker Calin Popescu Tariceanu (leader of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats – minor in the ruling coallition) recently declared that Danube-Bucharest Canal was a “huge mistake”, since it does not answer real needs from the economic point of view. Such an investment could be justified only for the traffic of goods.
“The best approach for this project shows us the canal is not necessary because from the economic point of view it does not answer real needs, a traffic of goods whose volume would justify such an investment. You must take into account that the railway uniting Bucharest and Giurgiu has not been functioning for 10 years. If such an economic need existed, the first thing and the most simple one would be to repair the railway to answer these needs. To understand the uselessness of such a project from the economic point of view we should ask the Transport Ministry a simple question - how many years they need to pay back the Danube-Black Sea Canal. When we get the answer we will see about the Danube-Bucharest Canal. I felt the need to approach that matter because I saw it approached again,” said the Senate leader.
PSD ( social-democrat- major party în the coallition)president Liviu Dragnea announced in August that one of the government priority projects will be to continue works for Danube-Bucharest Canal and building new ports at Glina and Mihailesti. During premier Dancila’s recent visit to the United Arab Emirates a concrete investment suggestion was made for this project begun during Nicolae Ceausescu’s regime. “They are interested in building Bucharest port on Danube-Bucharest Canal,”Dancila declared for Antena 3, pointing out that the Romanian delegation would have meetings with representatives of an investment fund and with investors in agriculture and food industry.
Senate president Calin Popescu Tariceanu was present at the national forum of EU strategy for the Danube area, organized at Parliament Palace over November 5-6, 2018.
