Agriculture : Virgin forest area in Romania growing

The virgin and quasi-virgin area in Romania will grow by 19% reaching over 25,000 ha, according to data presented by the Ministry of Waters and Forests.

This area has exceeded 21,000 ha,and 17,000 ha of forests that have not been included in the National Catalogue of virgin and quasi virgin forests in Romania, are part of UNESCO World Patrimony.

The national catalogue had an area of 5,898.92 ha of virgin forests and 15,192.5 ha of quasi virgin forests mentioned on October 24, 2018.

In the last two years, 3,330 ha of virgin forests and 4m867 ha of quasi virgin forests have been introduced in the catalogue. In the following months this area will grow by 4,000 ha, according to estimates made and will be soon included in the National Catalogue.

The first edition of the catalogue, of December 6, 2016, included a total area of 2,569 ha of virgin forests and 10,325 ha of quasi virgin forests.

The amount of 2.5 million lei allocated, comes from the Environment fund and is approved by government decision 945/2016.

At the same time, the Ministry publicly expressed the intention to make a permanent partnership with the civil society. In this respect, the Ministry signed a partnership with WWF DCP Romania, a document by which the Ministry assumed a series of measures which meet the efforts to complete the identification process of all virgin forests in Romania, ministry representatives say.

The first secular forests in Romania appeared in 1906, in Bucovina, when actions to set up Slatioara Secular Wood Reservation, on an area of 671.11 ha began. Today, the Secular Woods of Slatioara are included on the list of UNESCO World Patrimony, to be included in the Catalogue as virgin forest.
