Food prices in Romania go down 8.23pct in June
Food prices in Romania declined 8.23 per cent in June, on a monthly basis, and 6.44 per cent year-on-year, according to data released on Friday by the National Statistics Institute (INS).
Non-food prices had a slight increase in June from May, at 0.08 per cent; while y-o-y it was 0.76 per cent.
Services prices also advanced this June from May 0.22 percent, and 2.48 per cent from June 2014.
The highest price falls in food this June compared with May were recorded for potatoes (nearly 15 per cent); eggs (13.08 per cent); sugar (12.5 per cent) and maize flour (12 per cent).
Prices for cow's milk were down 11.5 per cent; prices for butter declined 11.14 per cent, while prices for edible oil were down 11.21 per cent this June from May and 10.54 per cent for coffee.
The drops in poultry meat prices were 11.89 per cent; they were 10.47 per cent in pork meat and 8.75 per cent in beef. Prices for fresh fish declined 9.02 per cent.
Fresh fruit prices recorded the smallest drops in the food category, at just 3.5 per cent, with prices for citric fruits and other Mediterranean fruits were down 4.73 per cent.
The largest drops in prices in the beverage category were recorded in beer (0.87 per cent), while wine prices declined just 0.08 per cent. On the other hand, prices for plum brandy, brandy and other beverages were up 0.06 per cent.
As far as non-food prices are concerned, INS data show a slight decrease only in prices for detergents, of 0.03 per cent. The largest price increases were recorded for cars and spare parts (0.30 per cent); watches, audio and video devices and sports items (0.20 per cent), tobacco and cigarettes (0.18 per cent) and domestic soap (0.16 per cent).
In the services category, prices went down 1.22 per cent for restaurants, cafes and cafeterias, and up for water, sewage and sanitation (0.87 per cent), bus passes (0.72 per cent), air transport (0.51 per cent), phone (0.50 per cent), hygiene and cosmetics (0.30 per cent), rents (0.25 per cent), car and electronic repairs and photo works (0.22 per cent) , as well as cinemas, theatres, museums, expenditure for education and tourism (0.22 per cent).
