Communications Minister, Dan Nica: Romania will broadcast digital television programmes by year-end
Romania will broadcast digital television programmes until the end of this year and the Communications and Information Society Ministry (MCSI) will make all efforts to complete this measure, Communications Minister Dan Nica said on Wednesday.
'We must have digital television in Romania and we shall have it. It is an obligation. We are paying great efforts so that by the end of the year we have digital television programmes in Romania, as it will increase the accessibility level of the user to television programs. As it is an air broadcasting system, the digital television system is not penetration-dependent as the cable television or cost-dependent for buying satellite dishes. There are many areas where the access was low, but this system will allow any Romanian to access television systems,' Nica said.
This broadcasting will be made through the National Radio Communications Company (SNR), the state-owned operator's stations being largely compatible.
Romania initially committed to the European Union (EU) to complete the transition to digital television by 2012, after having exceeded the first time the limit set for the end of 2009. The final transition to digital television will take place in Romania by January 1, 2015, after the authorities of Bucharest obtained a two-year postponement until the digital switchover process would be completed all over Europe.
