APIA : acquisitions of "green" cars increased in Romania in Q1; market share reaches 5.7pct

"Green" cars (electric & hybrid) acquisitions in Europe saw an important increase in the first quarter of 2020, although the general development of the car market was negative, in Romania reaching a market share of 5.7%, compared to only 4.1% in the same period of 2019, according to data from the Automotive Manufacturers and Importers Association (APIA),, which quoted the latest analyses published on this topic.

"Recent available public analyses show that, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the acquisitions of 'green' cars (electric & hybrid) in Europe (but also in Romania) saw a significant increase in the first quarter of 2020, although the general development of the car market was a negative one (-26.3% on the EU + EFTA + UK, with -22.2% in Romania). (...) ", an APIA release shows.

The APIA says that in Romania, too, the development in the first quarter of 2020 of "green" cars is a positive one, reaching a market share of 5.7%, compared to only 4.1%, as in the previous year, both as a consequence of the decrease in the volumes of thermal engines cars (petrol, diesel), but also as a result of a higher volume than the one registered last year (1,575 in 2020, compared to 1,469 in 2019).

Moreover, it should be noted that this significant increase in the interest for electric cars occurs in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and the difficulties of carrying out the activity caused by the restriction of activity in many institutions involved in the unfolding process of this programme.

"In this context, it is welcomed the openness shown both by the Interior Ministry and the Ministry of Environment, which, understanding citizens' and employees' need for mobility during this period, ensured, through the issued normative acts, the continuation of the Rabla and the Rabla Plus programmes, maintaining, at the same time, the functioning of the participating economic operators," APIA added.
