Agriculture: Stefan Timofti (Cotnari): 2014 was a difficult year for wine makers
The year 2014 was a difficult one for wine makers because of rains and Cotnari Wineries had to face big investments in vines to boost production, said Stefan Timofti, event manager at Cotnari Wineries on the occasion of a specialised seminar at Good Wine International Wine Fair organized by Romexpo this weekend.
“2014 was a very difficult year, which means investments in vines, more treatments because it was a rainy year. At Dragasani grail destroyed vines. I think investments were double the ones made in previous years, but we obtained a very good yield. Now we are waiting for wine to be born, “Timofti said.
He explained that the company handles 350 hectares of vine planted in 2007, divided into 50 hectares of Grasa de Cotnari, 50 ha of Feteasca Alba. Areas of flavored varieties cover 150 ha, 75 of which include varieties Tamaioasa Romaneasca, Busuioaca de Bohotin, while Feteasca Neagra grows on 100 ha.
“Grasa de Cotnari is a traditional Romanian variety, which has been in the area for 600 years. This variety can produce dry, semi-sweet and sweet wine. Its main characteristic is good acidity which maintains it bottled for several years. We also have Colocviu wine in Moscow, which is in fact Grasa de Cotnari. It is the only variety in Romania mentioned in all international specialized books. We have four wines in the Colocviu range - Colocviu in Athens, Colocviu in Rome, Colocviu in Moscow and Colocviu in Paris,”Timofti explained.
