Agriculture: National Forest Inventory up by only 0.04 pct in 2021, volume of harvested timber up by 1.7 pct
The National Forest Inventory increased by 0.04% in 2021 compared to the previous year, while the volume of harvested timber went up by 1.7%, according to data published on Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
As of December 31, 2021, the forest inventory area was 6,606,618 hectares (+2,412 hectares compared to 2020), of which the forest area totaled 6,449,456 hectares. This year saw an increase of only 39 hectares, with the forest area accounting for 97.6% of the national forest inventory.
According to official statistics, the 0.04% increase in the national forest inventory is mainly due to the redevelopment of wooded pastures and the introduction into the forest inventory of degraded lands and non-forested lands, set to be afforested in compliance with the law (Law no. 133/2015 for the amendment and completion of Law No. 46/2008 - Forestry Code).
On the other hand, the regenerated area decreased last year by 4.8%, respectively by 1,208 hectares, totaling 23,981 hectares.
In terms of the volume of wood harvested, it reached 19.994 million cubic meters (cubic meters), registering a surge of 342,000 hectares (+ 1.7%) compared to 2020, when it totaled 19.652 million cubic meters.
