Agriculture: European Commission approves new protected name for Romanian wine

The European Commission approved on Wednesday the registration of the Romanian wine “Insuratei” in the European Product Register of products with “protected origin name”, a press release of the European Executive shows.

“Insuratei” wines can be white, red or rose. Grapes must be grown in Braila county, in the Eastern part of Romania and the wine produced in the same area.

“Insuratei” vineyards have been grown since ancient times. The use of specific techniques with environment protection, help maintain balanced flora and fauna in the area.

The wine can be sold as organic wine, according to regulations of organic cultures.

The registered name is protected against any practices that could hide the real product origin.

Romania has four registered products of which three Protected Geographic Indexes: Topoloveni plum jam, Sibiu salami and smoked Novac from Barsa Land. Ibanesti cheese is registered as Protected Origin Name.

Documents of four other products were sent to the European Commission and are being analysed: Plescoi sausages, Saveni cheese, Sibiu cheese and smoked Danube sardines.
