Agriculture : Beekeepers ask authorities to adopt firm position in forbidding use pesticides in melliferous crops
Romanian beekeepers ask authorities to adopt a firm position in forbidding the use of last generation pesticides in melliferous crops, such as the sunflower, rape and corn crops, in the context in which at the latest meeting they had with representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture there was no clear position stated.
From data made available by the Romanian officials, Romania doesn't use these types of pesticides in agriculture, but it didn't voted against them either.
The President of the International Federation of Beekeeping Association - Apimondia, Gilles Ratia, who paid a visit to Romania over April 17-21, 2013, accompanied by the President of the Romanian Beekeeping Association (ACA), Ioan Fetea, asked the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Daniel Constantin, to ban the use of latest generation pesticides, neonicotinoids, in the melliferous cultures, because they are dangerous not only for the bees, but also for the environment, biodiversity and, implicitly, for the people's health.
Presidential adviser Adrian Radulescu stated that he will never agree with the introduction of the latest generation of pesticides in the Romanian agriculture, for they represent 'the simplest, but also the most dangerous, solution'.
The European Commission will temporary restrict, starting December 1 this year, the use of three of the most popular pesticides, due to fears related to the danger they represent for bees, after the Monday vote of member states didn't reach a qualified majority, either 'pro' or 'against', in respect to this measure, EC announced in a release from Brussels on Monday.
