Agriculture : Average wheat yield dropped by 20% and wheat price grew by7 25% in 2012
The average wheat per hectare yield dropped by 20% this year compared to the same period of 2011, while the price of wheat grew by 20-25% but the quality has not been seen in the last 25 years, said representatives of the Inter-professional Organization “Cereals and Derivative Products”. “In point of wheat quality there was an improvement this year, with a quantity reduction of 20% due to drought and weather conditions which forced these cultures lately,” said the secretary of state in the Ministry of Agriculture, Daniel Botanoiu.
The chairman of the Inter-professional Organization , Aurel Popescu confirmed the quality of the wheat production this year, considering it “unseen in the last 25 years.” Indeed we have an average yield smaller than last year, but we have an exceptional quality, but from this point of view a very large quantity of wheat goes to export. We want to have a balance sheet to know what we can count on. The average yield is smaller but producers have a higher price by 20-25% compared to previous years,” Popescu said.As for the effects of the higher bread price, the4 head of the inter-professional organization consider they will be seen in at least a month. “Effects can be seen with flour and will be seen with bread after a month”, Aurel Popescu added.
According to the secretary of state in the Ministry of Agriculture, 90% of the area cultivate with barley has been picked, 30% of wheat , 50% of rape, for which a loss of 17% is estimated. The MADR official said that harvesting would end in ten days in case no climate incidents arise.
According to INS data, Romania’s wheat yield was 7.103 million tons in 2011 compared to 5.812 million tons in 2010, 1.355 million tons for barley (1.311 tons in 2010) and for oat 376,000 tons against 304,000 tons the previous year.
Romania exports twice as much wheat and corn over Jan-April 2012 as in similar period of 2011
Romania has exported 1.448 million tons of wheat and corn in the first 4 months of 2012, twice as much as the amount exported in the similar period of 2011, according to data the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR).
Out of the quantity of cereals exported to foreign markets (the EU market and other markets), the wheat accounted for 474,149.295 tons and the corn for 973,856.856 tons.
According to MADR, the revenues from the export of wheat and corn totaled 384.26 million euros over Jan. - April 2012, with over 75 percent of the total amount, namely 289.52 million euros standing for the corn sales.
Compared to the similar period of 2011, there was a 1.8-fold increase (209, 349 million euros in 2011) in revenues thanks to the advantageous export prices on the global market. Over the above-mentioned period, 1.23 million euros have been collected from the export of 4,768 tons of barley and 4.188 million euros for 8,744.5 tons of rice.
On the other hand, Romania has imported 72,992 tons of wheat worth 14.21 million euros and 255,248 tons of corn worth 86.97 million euros in the first 4 months of this year.
