Achim Irimescu: we have to very serious threats of diseases in swine and sheep
The minister of agriculture Achim Irimescu stated on Saturday in Pericei that Romania faces at present two very serious threats as regards the possibility of getting from the neighbouring countries two diseases with swine and cattle, diseases which could produce a real economic catastrophe in our country.
‘In the north, in Ukraine there is African swine fever present in other member states as well where this fever produced damage of hundreds of million euro, so it would be an economic catastrophe to get this disease in Romania and in Hungary. In the south we have bovine nodular dermatosis which, as we talked to the Bulgarian minister, was under control following the vaccine but we must be sure it does not get in the other two countries Romania and Hungary.’ Said Achim Irimescu, who was present on Saturday in Pericei for a meeting with his Hungarian counterpart Fazekas Sandor.
The minister of agriculture added that he discussed with Fazekas Sandor about a collaboration on the part of vet services.
‘We settled with minister Fazekas that we need a tighter collaboration, especially on the part of vet services as, you forget that we have two very serious threats’ the quoted source said.
Achim Irimescu added that on 8 and 9 September there will be a reunion in Sophia with the participation of the ministers in the area and the European commissionaire for health Vytenis Andriukaitis, during the meeting the discussions being about the ways to stop the spread of these diseases.
