Traian Basescu: Romania should be compensated by EU for abandoning Nabucco project
President Traian Basescu declared on Tuesday that Romania should be compensated by EU for abandoning the Nabucco project by allocating resources for the modernization of railways, national roads from regional infrastructure projects managed by the European Commission.
“For the time being Romania considers it should be compensated for abandoning the Nabucco project. Take into consideration that Romania was not between South Stream and Nabucco but just said Nabucco,” Basescu said, adding that the project was assumed by Romania because it was in charge of the EU diversification objective for natural gas supply.
He considers that South Stream “is just a consolidation of Gazprom hegemony,” and mentioned he did not care about the gas pipe being built; he was not responsible for the European objective.
Basescu asked the Romanian ambassadors to EU countries at the meeting held at Cotroceni Palace, to explain and support this compensation for Romania as it was the only state which did not oscillate between Nabucco and South Stream, as its neighbour states.
The head of state referred to the program “Connecting Europe” managed by the European Commission which allocated funds for programs modernizing railroads, national roads and infrastructure for Internet connections.
The president also showed that all present official statements say Nabucco was not abandoned but a branch of TAP gas pipe will go on the Nabucco route, but he did not think that would happen in less than 10 years.
