State aid of over 43 million lei for the closing down of the mines Lonea and Lupeni

The government approved, in the meeting on Friday, the state aid worth over 43 million lei for the closing down of the mines in Lonea and Lupeni, considered to be non-competitive, part of the energy complex Hunedoara –S.A, in insolvency for 2022.

‘The energy complex Hunedoara will receive a state aid for the closing down of the non-competitive coal mines (Lonea and Lupeni) worth 43.246 million lei for 2022, which is completely covered from the state budget through the budget of the ministry of energy’ said the government, in a press release.

The state aid is offered for the covering of the exceptional costs of the units in final closing down, costs which are not connected to current production.

Thus, the money will be used for compensation payments offered to the employees, professional retraining, rehabilitation of the former mining exploitations, as well as for the surface recultivation.

‘These support measures are offered until 2024 and were notified and authorised by the European Commission through decision no.C (2016) 7.719/final, modified and completed by decision no. C (2018) 1001/final regarding the closing down of the non-competitive coal mines from Romania. At the same time, the non-compliance of the energy complex Hunedoara with the conditions included in the Decision of the European Commission, as well of the obligations committed with a view to obtaining the state aid, will determine the implementation of the measures necessary to recover the state aid by the ministry of energy’ the government said.

The state aid is offered with the observance of the community legal provisions in the domain, directly applicable to Romania, as EU member state.
